article template A city-owned newspaper is often a better bet than a national newspaper or local one, according to a new research paper from the University of Waterloo.
It says if you want to find a newspaper in the right part of the country, it’s best to check out the largest newspaper in that city.
“The more you get into a metropolitan area, the more likely you are to get a local newspaper, and vice versa,” said senior author and University of Ottawa journalism student Jordan Wicks.
“And it’s a lot easier to find an article in a metro area, if you can find a regional newspaper.”‘
It’s really difficult to find articles’Wicks and his co-authors looked at about 500 publications in Canada and found that the majority of them are based in the big cities.
The research found that between 90 per cent and 95 per cent of the publications are either owned by a large newspaper, or have a strong newspaper brand.
Wicks said the researchers had no idea what the proportion of the national papers were until they started looking.
“We didn’t know whether we had a good idea of it until we started looking,” he said.
“So I think it’s very difficult to really find articles.”
The researchers looked at all the publications in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area and found about 85 per cent are owned by regional newspapers.
Wigsby said the majority are owned and operated by the big three media companies.
“In other words, they’re owned and managed by three of the largest newspapers in Canada, which means there’s a large degree of local control,” she said.
Wigglesby said that the larger papers have the financial resources to do a good job in terms of editorial content.
“There are very few issues where a newspaper is not operating well.
And so it’s really a question of the quality of editorial and how they deliver it.”
She said there are many factors that go into making sure a publication can be successful, from how they’re run to how well they cover the major issues.
Wiggins said it’s hard to know what the quality is in an individual publication, but it’s clear that a lot of the issues are being addressed, whether that’s about the quality or the content of a publication.
“You can see that there’s very much a conversation going on between the local paper and the national paper and a lot more people are doing that,” she added.
Wriggsby said if you are looking for a local paper, it can be hard to find.
“For me, it was really hard to choose between a national or regional paper because the ones that were in Toronto and Toronto-Danforth were not the ones I wanted to read.
So I just decided to just stick with the regional ones,” she explained.
Wickens said if your city doesn’t have a national paper, there are a few things you can do.
“I’ve done some research on what the best newspapers in the U.S. are.
And there are two of the biggest newspapers in each state, and the biggest ones in New York and Connecticut,” she noted.”
So if you’re in New Jersey, there’s probably a better newspaper in New England than the one in New Orleans.”
Wicks suggested that it can also be tough to find local newspapers in cities where there aren’t a lot, because people tend to stick with what they know.
“A lot of people will tell you, ‘Oh, well, if I had to pay $1,500 to buy a newspaper, I’d just stick to the one I already own,'” she said, noting that that is a good bet.
Wickers said it was also important to look at what a paper is known for, and if it’s not known well, it may not be worth the money to spend on it.
“It really is the balance between the newsworthiness of the paper and its value, and then the quality,” she pointed out.
“If you’re going to buy it, you want it to be worth at least the cost of the newspaper it’s supposed to be printed on.”
