NEW YORK (AP) An ex-CIA officer said President Donald Trump ordered him to assassinate him as he was leaving the White House.
In an explosive account published Thursday by The Associated Press, James Clapper Jr., a retired U.S. Army intelligence officer, said in a phone call with a former White House aide in the spring of 2017 that he was instructed to kill the then-candidate.
Clapper Jr. says Trump told him he wanted to “send a message” that Russia had invaded the U.K. in late 2017.
“It was clear to me that President Trump was very concerned about the outcome of the election,” Clapper said in an interview with The Associated Statesman newspaper.
Clapmon, a former FBI special agent, told the newspaper he was asked by an aide in April 2017 to kill President Donald J. Trump in the Oval Office.
“The reason I was told to kill him is that I had been to his office the previous day,” Clapper told the AP.
“He told me, ‘I need you to kill this guy and you don’t know who it is.'”
Clapper said he never told Trump.
The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
